A Guide To Protect Your Skin and Hair All Summer Long

How does summer affect your skin and hair?

The warmth of summer is comfortable, and it feels like you can stay under the sun for as long as you like. But did you know that heat and humidity can impact your skin and hair health?

The first thing you will notice is dehydration. When this happens, your skin starts producing more sebum, which leads to more breakouts. Similarly, when your hair is dehydrated, it will have a rough texture, dryness, and dullness. It can also accelerate hair shedding and breakage, leading to thinner hair.

Secondly, UV damage. Intense UV rays can damage your skin barrier, leading to a lack of elasticity, dryness, and premature ageing. UV rays can damage your hair, the same way your skin gets sunburned. It can increase breakage, causing hair dryness and scalp sunburn. 

Additionally, melanin, the molecule that plays a vital role in pigmentation for hair colour, actually protects against sun damage by absorbing UV rays. However, continual sun exposure can affect the melanin structure, causing hair discolouration.

Lastly, humidity. High humidity in the air can lead to increased sebum production and sweat, which clog the pores, causing breakouts and flare-ups of existing skin conditions. On the other hand, when the humidity is high, your hair can absorb the extra moisture from the air. This causes your hair shafts to swell and cuticles to break, resulting in frizzy hair.

How do you protect your skin and hair during the summer?

1. Drink enough water to avoid dehydration.

Ideally, drink more than 2-3 L daily to keep hydrated. It is crucial for our skin, hair, and overall health. Without realising, you can get a heatstroke. Even though you are not thirsty, your body can be dehydrated. Drink plenty of water constantly.

2. Always apply sunscreen with SPF 50+ and PA++ on your skin and hair.

You should always apply sunscreen to your body parts exposed to the sun, especially your face. Additionally, you can use a sun protection spray for your hair and scalp. Always choose a sunscreen with SPF 50+ and PA++ to protect your skin and hair from UVA and UVB rays.
