Winter Hair Care Tips - How To Minimise Seasonal Hair Loss?

Have you noticed more hair in your brush this season? Then, you might be experiencing seasonal hair loss.

What are the stages of hair growth?

Let’s start with hair shedding, a normal part of the hair growth cycle in which we typically lose about 50 to 100 hairs daily. Each strand of hair is at a unique stage in a 2-5-year growth cycle that includes four main phases.

1. Anagen Phase (Growth Stage)

This is the primary growth phase, where hair strands actively grow. About 90% of your hair is in this phase at any given time, and during Anagen, hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month. This stage can last anywhere from 2 to 7 years, depending on genetics.

2. Catagen Phase (Transition Stage)

Lasting a few weeks, the Catagen phase marks the end of active growth. During this stage, hair follicles begin to shrink, and the growth rate slows.

3. Telogen Phase (Resting Stage)

In the Telogen phase, which typically lasts 3 to 5 months, hair growth pauses, but new hair begins to form beneath the surface in the follicle. About 10-15% of hairs are usually in this stage.

4. Exogen Phase (Shedding Stage)

Known as the shedding phase, Exogen lasts 2 to 5 months. During this stage, older hairs detach and fall out to make room for new hair. Shedding around 50 to 100 hairs per day is normal in this phase.

What is seasonal hair loss?

On the other hand, seasonal hair loss is a type of periodic shedding often connected to a condition called telogen effluvium, where hair enters a resting phase prematurely. This shedding commonly peaks during spring and autumn.

The phenomenon is thought to be linked with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which includes low mood triggered by reduced sunlight exposure, as well as hormonal shifts and increased stress levels. During autumn, as daylight decreases and weather turns gloomier, many people experience mood changes, stress, and anxiety, all of which can disrupt hormonal balance and contribute to seasonal hair shedding.

How to minimise seasonal hair loss

  • Maintain a Balanced Diet

Nutritional deficiencies can play a big role in hair health. To support healthy hair growth, include foods rich in Omega-3s, iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin B5, and selenium in your diet. Nutrient-dense options like nuts, eggs, oatmeal, legumes, salmon, tomatoes, and blueberries can help nourish your hair from within.

  • Manage Stress Levels

Stress significantly impacts overall health, including hair health. To reduce stress and anxiety, try incorporating calming activities like spending time outdoors, exercising regularly, or practicing meditation. Keeping your mind and body relaxed can make a positive difference for your hair and well-being.

  • Customise Your Hair Care Routine

Adopt a gentle hair care routine tailored to your needs. Opt for sulfate-free, silicone-free, and non-comedogenic products to avoid scalp buildup. Exfoliate your scalp twice a week and massage it regularly to promote circulation. Additionally, limit heat styling and avoid harsh hair products that can weaken your hair over time.

Hair care regimen for healthier hair all year-round

Experiencing seasonal hair loss? You’re not alone! Here are our recommended steps to keep your hair healthy and resilient throughout the seasons.

1. Exfoliate Your Scalp

Gently exfoliate twice a week using products with salicylic or glycolic acid to remove dead skin cells and buildup on your scalp. A clarifying shampoo can also help control dandruff, leaving your scalp refreshed and balanced.

2. Massage For Circulation

Use our Scalp Massager to promote healthy blood circulation and cellular renewal. A relaxed scalp helps optimise hair growth, so give yourself a soothing massage whenever needed.

3. Use a Filtered Shower Head

Hard water is a common factor in scalp irritation and hair damage. Its minerals can cause dryness, breakage, split ends, and conditions like dandruff. To combat these effects, consider installing a filtered shower head to soften the water and protect your hair.

4. Nourish and Protect

Choose a shampoo and conditioner that deliver deep nourishment and hydration. Our Glowing Hair Mask is formulated with natural Dead Sea minerals to strengthen fragile hair, reduce breakage, and stimulate hair growth while deeply moisturising the hair and scalp. Expect hydrated, shiny, and detangled hair that feels as good as it looks!
